Jazz is a dance style which amalgamates a wide variety of dance styles. Pre-1950s, Jazz referred to dance styles which emanated from African-American dances. Since the 1950s a new style of Jazz emerged – modern jazz with its roots in Carribean dance. All individual jazz styles traces it roots to one of these two origins. Jazz was hugely popular in the 1950s and still is all over the world.
Jazz as a dance form came over to the United States from Africans who were brought over as slaves. Therefore it has strong roots in African vernacular dances. This dance form developed alongside the popular jazz music in New Orleans in the early 1900s. Then in the 1930s & 40s, the dance form then continued to evolve into a theatre-based performance dance favoured by trained dancers. During this period, choreographers from the ballet world and the modern dance world experimented with this style of dance. This new developing dance form greatly differed to that of earlier dance in 1900s in New Orleans.
